OCD Therapy in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, & New Mexico

What to expect

Successful OCD treatment revolves around changing your relationship to anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard treatment for OCD, but there are additional components that play a vital role.

My passion is helping OCD clients navigate their way to a richer, more fulfilling life.

Overview of OCD therapy

Step 1: Understand your fears

The first step in OCD treatment is to understand how your fears are impacting your daily life. While many people have numerous fears, there are often one or two underlying themes to these fears. Identifying these common themes makes treatment easier.

This stage of therapy also includes education about both the “obsessive” and “compulsive” components of OCD. It’s critical to understand how certain behaviors perpetuate the OCD cycle.

Step 2: Define your goals and values

A crucial stage of therapy is discussing what you want to get out of it.

It goes without saying that you want to diminish the negative impact of anxiety. But I’m interested in learning what you want to accomplish or experience in life. “What would you be doing more of if you didn’t have OCD?” is a question I ask early in treatment.

One we know your answer to this question, we know where therapy needs to take us.

Step 3: Develop a plan of action

At this stage of therapy, we come up with a comprehensive plan for confronting your fears. The intensity of your fears in combination with your therapy goals determines the order and manner of how we do this work.

Step 4: Face your fears

This may sound like the scariest part of treatment, but it’s much easier than you might think once we have a detailed plan.

I guide you every step of the way through this process. While this can be challenging at times, we move forward in manageable steps toward your goals.

Many people find it liberating as they begin shifting their relationship to their fears and have richer, more rewarding life experiences.

Step 5: Learn, grow, and thrive!

After making progress with your OCD treatment, you’ll have an entirely new perspective on doubt, uncertainty, and the fears that led you to therapy.

This final stage of therapy explores these insights and what they mean for your life, which is often a very exciting and meaningful discussion!

We also talk about tools and strategies for maintaining your progress after the conclusion of therapy.
