About Me

Christopher C. Guider, PhD (literature), LMHC

OCD therapy from an insider

I was diagnosed with OCD in my early 20s, giving me a firsthand experience of some of the many manifestations of this condition. Thankfully, I subsequently received OCD-specialized treatment, which allowed me to recover and regain control of my life. This was hard work, but it was deeply meaningful and transformative.

This personal experience with OCD makes me passionate about helping individuals with OCD or anxiety heal, grow, and thrive!

I am based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but I work with clients throughout New Mexico.

My background

I bring a diverse skill set to my work as a psychotherapist thanks to a background as a university literature professor and professional writer.

My education

I completed my undergraduate education in English Literature as a Plan II scholar at the University of Texas at Austin.

I then completed a master’s degree in European Literature at the University of Cambridge (UK), after which I spent a year in Berlin as a Fulbright Scholar.

I obtained a doctorate in English and Comparative Literature at the University of Sussex (UK), where I studied the relationship between memory, place, and writing in works by American, British, French, and German authors.

I received my master’s degree in Counseling at the University of New Mexico. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of New Mexico (license # CTB-2022-0304).

My approach & philosophy

I work with OCD and anxiety using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is considered the gold-standard, evidenced-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. I also draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Existential Therapy to build motivation, define values and goals, and approach struggle as an opportunity for growth.

Learning to tolerate and even celebrate uncertainty is key to triumphing over OCD and anxiety.

I work with clients to change their relationship to anxiety and doubt, helping them derive meaning and purpose from these difficult experiences.
